That is why she is always "thinking of ending things". "Īlternatively she could represent women who he has had failed relationships with in general. He hoped to meet her again, but that never happened. The wikipedia plot summary of the book states the following: " Jake becomes the narrator and recalls how he wished he had given her his phone number that trivia night in the pub, but was too shy. Later, in the school, the girl says that she never went out with Jake and that describing her first meeting with him would be like describing a mosquito bite she received 40 years ago.ģ. When they tell Jake's parents the story of their first meeting the girlfriend says that she initiated contact because she knew he was too shy to talk to her.Ģ. She represents all of the women who Jake was too anxious to approach in his life. To my understanding, the female protagonist is most likely a figment of Jake's imagination. Like all of Kaufman's films, I think that human relationships are the main focus of the film. I am not sure if we are supposed to interpret the literal events of the film in the same way as the novel, or whether a film like this even CAN be interpreted from a literal perspective. In order to get a better idea for what happened in the film I looked up the novel it was based on on Wikipedia, but reading the plot summary it seems like the film might have diverged from the novel a bit in the second half. I'd love to hear everyone's interpretations and opinion. My mind is still reeling after watching it - I definitely haven't figured it out yet. Of all of Kaufman's films, this one was by far the most abstract and difficult for me to understand. I just finished watching "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" for the first time.
